Choosing a homeopath means choosing how your case will be understood and followed over time, often for years. Not all practitioners work the same way. These are six qualities worth looking for, and a question you can ask to find out where any practitioner stands.

1. They prescribe one remedy at a time

A skilled homeopath prescribes only one remedy at a time. Combining several at once muddies the picture, makes case management impossible, and runs contrary to the classical principles Hahnemann laid down. If you cannot tell which remedy acted, you cannot know where to go next.

AskWill I be taking one remedy at a time, or more than one?

2. They never repeat mechanically

A good homeopath observes the response to the first few doses and adjusts repetition so that a new dose comes only when it is truly needed. There is no fixed schedule. Each case is different, each pathology asks for different repetition, and sensitivity varies dramatically from one patient to the next. A dosing plan should always come with clear follow-up instructions.

AskHow will you decide when I take the next dose?

3. They respect the power of the remedy

Homeopathic remedies are profound healing agents, capable of altering the state of health at the deepest level. A good homeopath understands this and stays careful and measured, never cavalier with dosing or repetition. Wrong dosing or over-frequent repetition can cause aggravations and complications. Respect for the remedy is the skill.

New or worsening symptoms also need appropriate medical evaluation. They should not simply be assumed to be a homeopathic aggravation.

AskHow do you guard against an aggravation, and what will you do if one happens?

4. They know when to wait

One of the most undervalued skills in homeopathy is the ability to wait. After a well-chosen remedy has been given, the healing process needs time to unfold, and a practitioner too quick to intervene can derail it. Doing nothing is sometimes the most skilled thing a homeopath can do. Waiting on a prescription must never delay necessary medical care.

AskAfter a remedy has acted, how long will you wait before changing anything?

5. They understand water-based dosing

Water-based dosing allows faster healing and gentler dosing, which minimizes aggravations. Hahnemann's own approach evolved across editions of the Organon, and a knowledgeable homeopath is fluent in all three:

Whichever is used, you should receive a specific preparation and dosing plan for your own case.

AskWill you use dry doses or water doses in my case, and why that choice?

6. They understand miasms and chronic disease

Homeopathy goes far beyond symptom management. A serious practitioner understands Hahnemann's theory of chronic disease and the three miasms, traditionally described as Psora, Sycosis and Syphilis, and how they underlie most chronic illness. Without this, deep and lasting cure is rarely possible.

These are concepts within homeopathic theory, distinct from modern medical diagnoses or genetic testing, and they are why a practitioner will want your personal and family history alongside the present complaint.

AskWhat in my family and personal history matters to you, and why?

A conversation before you begin

A useful first conversation should leave you clear about the practitioner's training, the scope of their work, consultation fees, follow-up arrangements, and how the approach fits with the care you already have.

These six are also how I work. You can read about my background and what a consultation involves if you want to see whether the practice feels right for you.
